Alana's Story

Alana Rose was born at 34 weeks on June 15, 2008. Several hours after her
birth it was discovered that she had a bowel blockage called meconium ileus.
Alana was then transferred to another hospital which was two hours away from
her home and mother.

The next day (before her mother was even able to get to the hospital to be
with her) Alana was taken in for surgery to remove the bowel obstruction.
This surgery was successful and Alana was moved to the Barbara Bush
Children's Hospital in Portland, Maine.

Three days later, the surgeon who removed Alana's bowel obstruction spoke to
her mother and informed her that there was a possibility that Alana had
Cystic Fibrosis. Alana's mother had never even heard of CF and was
devastated. The next day Alana's blood test came back positive for CF.
Alana was released from the children's hospital after two weeks, and went
home to be with her Mommy.

Alana has been through many things in her short life. She has had two
surgical procedures so far, but she considers herself lucky that she has not
been hospitalized since she was two years old. Alana has to take a slew of
medications and has to do long breathing treatments several times a day in
order to keep her from becoming ill. This sometimes discourages Alana, but
she always manages to look on the bright side. Alana enjoys making other
people happy more than anything, and those who have the pleasure of meeting
her, never forget her.
