Anthony's Story

On October of 2011, Anthony started having strong pains in his
legs and groin area after playing with his sweet pit-bull, Malisha. He was
only 2 and very active. A few days went by and the pain went away. A week
before Halloween, the pain was back and worse, so we headed to the ER.

After an exam the doctor noticed his one testicle never dropped and he had many
swollen lymph nodes in the groin. We were given a slip for an ultrasound that
was scheduled for 3 days later, after which,  we made an appointment with a urologist at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

On 11-17-11 we saw the urologist and he said Anthony's walking (which had
gotten worse) was something to do with his muscles and not his testicle. We
were sent home with orders to see pediatrics the next day .

The next afternoon we saw Dr. Jabir who asked why Anthony was so pale.
(To me he looked fine) Blood work and X-rays were done immediately.  After returning to his office,
and after the testing, his dad and I were ushered to the back office.
I knew something was up,  but never would of guessed what
our crying pediatrician was going to tell us. He said we needed to get
things packed and be in Pittsburgh in 3 hours. We had no idea what was going
to happen but home we went to pack.  We got to the hospital and went to
the ER to get an IV started for labs and the first of MANY blood
transfusions. (His hemoglobin was only a 3.2 when we got started where normal
is between 11 and 13).   Anthony's diagnosis was leukemia.

Throughout the last 3 1/2 years of treatment, Anthony has developed( SP)
steroid psychosis, ODD(oppositional defiant disorder), SPD (sensory processing disorder),
PDD-NOS (Pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified) and ADHD
(attention deviant hyperactive disorder). Anthony is almost through
treatment and we're hoping some of these issue subside and we can get back
to our normal lives.

"Thank You"
"Anthony had a long surgery and recovery yesterday, August 28th. He had his blanket every step of the way. The surgeon even let him have it in the OR so he knew he was protected. Thank you and the wonderful workers who made this possible."
