Ethan's Story

Ethan was 2 months old when we were in a car accident. Where Ethan was sitting in the
car took the direct impact at 55MPH. He was taken to the hospital where they
found bleeding & swelling in his brain. They then took him an hour to the
Children's hospital where he spent the next 46 days. The 1st night they told us
he wasn't going to make it, and that he wouldn't be able to breath on his own.
They told us to prepare for the worst.

Three days in, the MRI showed no improvement. It showed continuous seizures. Ethan was on 15 different medicines for the first couple of weeks. Only time will tell is all they knew. A week & a half later, they were able to take him off the vent & I was able to hold him for the 1st time. It was a long, 46 days. He started taking his pacifier & bottle about 4 weeks later. (They had told us he wouldn't be able to suck.) He came home on 2
seizure meds, a blood pressure med, valium for irritation, antacid, & stool meds.

It's been almost 2 years. We uprooted the family to be closer to all of
Ethan's doctors. It's been a huge adjustment for all of us. Ethan has had to
have a Gtube placed to get the right amount of nutrition. He got sick with RSV &
flu in March and refused to take anything by mouth. He had his tonsils & adenoids
removed at the same time as the gtube placement. He is on 3 seizure meds, no
more blood pressure meds! We've had good days & not so good days. He is still
trying to be able to hold his head up. He is working on rolling. We are trying
to get him to eat by mouth again. He doesn't see anything but lights (when
lights change) & when color changes. So he goes to the Anchor Center for Blind
Children for vision therapy every week as well as doing physical therapy with a
home therapist & occupational therapy at the hospital.
