Junior's Story
Junior came to live with me at 2 years of age. At that time the doctors
told me he wouldn't possibly see six years of age. They also told us not to
expect anything from him. He would never recognize us, be able to express
him self, etc. etc. etc.
He was a tiny little guy with a huge smile which matched his huge
determination to get the most out of life. Anytime a doctor said he couldn't
do anything, he would prove them wrong.
We quickly learned that though Junior could not speak in the typical way,
he understood a great deal. He learned to use a switch placed near his head
to turn on toys, lights, a tape player, and also to play computer games. He
also started using his eyes to tell us "yes and no." It wasn't long before
we started introducing symbol communication and he was able to use his eyes
to tell us what he wanted. He now uses an iPad with eye gaze to let us know
what he needs, wants, or to just chat.
Junior has had many ups and downs over the years. His health issues have
made for many hospital stays and doctors visits. He never lets the
difficult times stop him though and has a quick smile, very silly sense of
humor, and loves life more then anyone I know. He is determined to get the
most out of every moment.
