Lorinda's Story

Lorinda was born 4 weeks early to a birth mom who didn't see the importance of taking her HIV medications. It was initially thought that Lorinda had escaped contracting the virus but at just a week old she tested positive. As an infant she was a very sick little girl, spending most of her time in the hospital for one illness after another. It was during that time that her HIV converted to AIDS status. Lorinda has been with me for seven years and has done well, with only one hospital admission. She is very susceptible to illness and we often have to quarantine ourselves to avoid things like the flu. This proves difficult for us as a family since we love to be active. In addition to her HIV she has sensory issues and severe ADHD with comprehension issues. Lorinda is amazing and takes everything in stride. She's learned through her frequent doctors visits that it's easiest not to fight but to rather go in, hold our her arm and get her blood work done quickly. She takes many medications twice a day, very nasty tasting meds, yet is a trooper and very rarely complains. She is a hero who is undeserving of this illness yet handles it with grace.

On her Make A Wish trip Lorinda fell in love with flamingos; hence her room and most of her clothes have this theme. She also loves Sphynx cats and has a dream of one day having her own. Lorinda is very talented at art and loves drawing and painting. She is kind hearted, fun and a good friend. Lorinda is gifted at gymnastics and it's our dream that she someday get to participate. One of Lorinda's favorite places is the beach but she's quick to say the mountains are great as well. She likes to travel and is always up for adventure. She would like everyone to know that they shouldn't be scared of "sick blood" and she has made it her mission to educate the public by having her own FB page.
