Madison's Story

Madison is 7 years old and has mitochondrial disease, a progressive disease affecting energy production throughout her body. Madison began experiencing symptoms shortly after birth. Madison has organ dysfunction throughout her body. Her GI system is currently the most affected and she requires IV nutrition through a permanent line in her chest. She also experiences issues with recurrent infections, temperature instability, hypotension, difficulty regulating her blood sugar, bladder and bowel dysfunction, difficulty gaining weight, seizures, and migraines. She has spent most of the last four months in the hospital. She is unable to attend school and receives homebound services. She experiences significant anxiety due to the intensity of recent medical interventions. She has extreme fatigue and muscle weakness. When Madison is feeling well, she is a spunky and silly 7 year old. She loves to play pranks on people, play with her dolls, and watch videos. Her goal in life is to be a “mermaid or a princess.”.
