Maggie's Story

Maggie suffered a brain injury at birth from lack of oxygen, also known as Hypoxic-ischemic Encephalopathy.  Because of HIE, she now has Cerebral Palsy along with many other diagnoses such as epilepsy, Microcephaly, Dysphagia, hip dysplasia, CVI, and Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder. Maggie eats via feeding tube and breathes via a tracheostomy tube.

Maggie was born on April 15th, 2011and spent the first 3 months of her life in NICUs and PICUs.  She was in and out of hospitals for aspiration pneumonia and in December of 2011, her lungs collapsed and she was discharged to hospice.  Despite her many challenges and what her life expectancy was according to many Drs., Maggie never gave up.  She was a fighter from the start.  In July 2012, Maggie had her tracheostomy surgery, which helped her to breathe much better and she was discharged from hospice.

Maggie will be 4 years old in April.  She currently attend preschool at Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind.  She has an amazing teacher. She also has many people who love and care for her.  When not at school, doctors and specialists' offices, hospitals, and therapy centers, Maggie enjoys watching Disney movies, listening to music, being held and read to, and playing with her dogs.  Her favorite movies are: Frozen, Finding Nemo, A Turtle's Tale, Happy Feet and Mulan.  She also loves the color blue, shiny objects, and nothing makes her smile faster than kisses and hugs from mom and dad.
