Michaela's Story

Michaela is a sweet 3 year old little girl.
Due to a lack of oxygen at birth, she suffered severe brain injury which caused hypotonia, CVI (vision impairment), cognitive and developmental delays, neurogenic bladder, and seizures. At 9 months old, she fell ill with meningitis. At that time she had an 8 hour seizure which resulted in putting her in a drug induced coma for a week. She also suffered more brain atrophy causing her to need a gtube and VP shunt. Her seizures also got worse after that.

Three weeks after her 3rd birthday her shunt got infected which led to an abdomen infection. After antibiotics and shunt replacement we thought she was healed and went home. Less than 2 weeks later, she was back for another abdomen infection. About 5 weeks after that discharge, she was admitted for pancreatitis. So far, she has been in the hospital 85 days total since late August, and will be here for at least another 4 weeks. She will have to have 3 more surgeries before she's discharged.

Michaela has been through so much in her 3 years. Even through all the pain, she eventually comes back to us with a smile. She has taught so many people what is really important in life. She is our hero.
